Local taxes & fees: the ones cities and counties collect
These vary block by block, so we keep them as reference — your county assessor and DMV are the final word.
Property tax (local)
Levied on real estate, funding schools, roads, and emergency services. Typically 0.3–2.5% of assessed value; national median ~1.1%. Counted in your estimate when you enter value + rate above.
Local sales tax add-ons
Many cities and counties add sales tax on top of the state rate — that’s why the section 9 field asks for your combined rate. Local add-ons commonly add 1–3.5 percentage points.
Other local fees
Vehicle registration ($50–$300/yr), utility taxes, and special-district assessments pay for transit and infrastructure. They’re paid at renewal or in your bills — not on your tax return.
Where each of your 11 taxes comes from
The U.S. system is layered: most people pay several of these at once, and your total burden is the sum.
Taxes on earnings
Individual income tax (10–37% progressive), payroll FICA (6.2% + 1.45%, matched), corporate income (21% federal + state, sections 3 & 11), and capital gains (0/15/20% long-term + 3.8% NIIT).
Taxes on purchases
Sales tax at the point of sale (6–10% typical combined), federal excise on gas/cigarettes/beer, state excise on fuel and tobacco, and tariffs on imports — usually built into store prices.
Taxes on ownership & wealth
Local property tax, the federal estate tax above the $13.99M exemption, gift tax over $19,000 per recipient, six states’ inheritance taxes, plus registration and district fees. The U.S. has no wealth tax.
